October 20, 2026 - "Others don’t like the solar plans either. The group Basin and Range Watch argues the 10,000-acre Sawtooth project would spoil dark night skies near Death Valley. So this fight has more than two sides."
The BLM has pissed off some solar developers by auctioning off geothermal leases that overlap with their large-scale solar applications. The projects are Sawtooth Solar, 10,000 acres in Nye County adjacent to Death Valley National Park, Lone Mountain Solar, west of Tonapah, Nivloc Solar west of Tonopah and Gold Dust Solar west of Tonopah.
For Sawtooth Solar, NextEra Energy says the geothermal parcels cover about 6,000 acres. That’s roughly 60 percent of its project. One parcel that sat completely on top of Sawtooth seems to have been quietly pulled from the sale. Sawtooth, if developed, would also destroy thousands of Joshua trees.
